How are they Installed?

Depending on pitch the number of slates you will need will vary from 16 to 19 slates per square metre, however for all normal situations the installation procedure is the same.

How do the slates hold up in strong winds?

Wind is not a problem. Eco Slate is tested to BS 5534: 2014 on a board roof for its resistance to uniformly distributed loads, in other words, the wind and snow likely to be encountered. The slate has also been independently tested for wind speeds up to 110mph with no water infiltration or discernible damage or distortion.

What type of nail should I use for installation?

Relevant size 15mm length and 5mm head, stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanised nails are recommended.

Do you need to use underlay during installation?

Yes, we recommend using a breathable membrane.

Can the slates be cut for angles?

Yes, a Stanley knife blade or any other cutting equipment will cut the slate.

What are the roof slates made of?

Eco Slate is made from 95% recycled plastic and a small amount of naturally occurring additives. Eco Slate is the only man made slate manufactured in the UK that is both recycled and recyclable.

Are the Eco Slates lightweight?

Eco Slates are extremely lightweight in comparison with most other options. On average, a square metre will weigh less than 12kg.

Does the colour fade?

Over the 50 year warranty expect a variable colour change; however the UV inhibitors ensure they are extremely fade resistant.

How are the slates packaged?

The slates are packaged in boxes of 16.

Do the slates get brittle in the sun?

No, Eco Slates have built-in UV inhibitors to protect against harmful UV rays.

Will the slates damage during hail storms?

No, the slates have been given a class 4 impact rating.

How many slates do you get to a square metre?

16 slates on average per square metre for a pitch of 20 to 45 degrees. 7 slates per linear metre for ridges and hips. 3 slates per linear metre for verges.

Will there be any noise problems during heavy rain or hail?

No, the slates are solid and not hollow, so the noise is kept at a minimum.

Are all slate colours supplied always the exact same colour?

Eco Slate is made from recycled material so some modest variation in colour is possible between batches, we recommend that boxes of slates are mixed on site and slates selected randomly for installation. Please ensure you order enough slates – we always recommend that the entire quantity of slates for each roof is ordered at the same time.

How many slates will I need if the pitch of my rood is below 20 degrees?

Roof pitches between 15-20 degrees require on average 17 slates per square metre. Roof pitches between 10-15 degrees require on average 19 slates per square metre. Please contact use if you require further information.
